| The City of Discovery ranked only behind Glasgow for the lowest average carbon dioxide emissions per dwelling of the 32 council areas north of the border.
Carbon dioxide, the main gas responsible for damaging climate change, is emitted when energy is used to heat, cool, power and light homes.
The report indicated wealth was a consideration, with people in the best-performing areas more frugal with their energy use.
Asked if fuel poverty could be a factor in the Scottish figures, a spokesman for environment charity Forum for the Future said, “That could well be the case.
“It might not be that people in Dundee are particularly eco-efficient.”
Domestic emission levels are due to a variety of factors including age and type of housing stock, quality of heating systems, ownership of appliances, occupancy levels and habits of occupants.
A British Gas spokesperson said, “What we have seen from the research is that in more affluent areas, people were less inclined to think about what they were spending.
“People in these areas tend to turn the lights and heating on and off like there’s no tomorrow, whereas those on low incomes will watch what they are doing.”
The average property in Dundee produces 4915kg of CO2 every year — the equivalent of flying around 10,000 miles by Boeing 747. |
