Dundee boy (5) took home ‘amphetamine’
The mystery substance found by a five-year-old Dundee boy in his primary school classroom was the drug amphetamine, it has been claimed, writes Stefan Morkis.
Speaking today, the boy’s father, who has asked not to be named, said police have confirmed the bag of powder contained the class B drug, more commonly known as speed.

However, Dundee City Council refused to comment today over the discovery of the drug in a city primary school.

Police have also not yet officially confirmed the bag contained amphetamine.

The boy, a pupil at Mossgiel Primary School, discovered the bag of powder in his class work tray, which is permanently kept in the classroom, just before going home yesterday.

He pocketed the bag, which contained significant amount of the powder, and took it home where his father discovered it in his coat pocket.

The father immediately informed police and took his son to hospital for tests in case he had ingested any of it. Fortunately, doctors gave him the all clear.

The father believes another child may have found the substance at his home and taken it into school.

Although the short-term effects of the drug can include feelings of alertness and euphoria, long-term use leads to addiction, insomnia, depression, psychosis and aggressive behaviour.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said they are still conducting inquiries into how the boy came to be in possession of the substance and are awaiting the results of tests to determine what exactly the substance was.

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said they were waiting on the results of the investigation before commenting.
