Big Weekend ballot closed
The organisers of the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Dundee received around 300,000 applications for the 30,000 available tickets, writes Steven Bell, GrapeVine writer.
The online ballot for the massive live music event at Camperdown Park closed last night, and the lucky punters will receive their pairs of tickets in the post by Tuesday.

The station confirmed that winners will not be notified in advance, part of a new distribution policy, which it’s hoped will combat online touts.

It has been suggested that the lack of advance notification could be a loophole in the security of the distribution system for the country’s biggest free music festival.

One local music fan pointed out today that, if any letters were to go missing, the intended recipient would be none the wiser.

The fan said, “I, like many other people, have entered the free draw, but the only way of finding out if we have been allocated a ticket is if one arrives on our doorstep by May 9.

“Surely an Email or letter to each individual, or sending tickets by recorded delivery, would have been appropriate in this case?”

The tickets are being issued far closer to the event than in previous years to “significantly reduce the opportunity for anyone to place tickets on eBay”.

A spokesperson for Radio 1 said today, “The tickets will be sent out by first class post, and the last people will receive them on Tuesday.

“People won’t know before they receive them. That was part of the terms and conditions on the website and people would have had to agree to them.”

American singer Pink, Dundee University-formed Snow Patrol and chart sensations Sugababes are among the main attractions confirmed for the Big Weekend.

Others taking to the two stages at Camperdown on May 13 and 14 include The Streets, Keane, Primal Scream, The Ordinary Boys and Muse.

In the week preceding the festival, Radio 1 will broadcast shows from across Scotland.

DJs including Chris Moyles, Colin Murray, Edith Bowman, Scott Mills, Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe will be introducing the bands on stage and broadcasting live from the event.
