| A fire that ripped through a derelict part of Strathmartine Hospital on the outskirts of Dundee last night is being treated as suspicious.
It’s believed vandals entered through an unsecured door. The building was extensively damaged by the blaze.
Firefighters from the Macalpine Road and Kingsway stations were called to the scene at 11.40pm last night and were at the scene for almost two hours.
They said they had caught the fire “in the nick of time”, or the consequences would have been much worse.
Police believe it is the latest in a string of deliberately lit fires.
Assistant Divisional Officer Martin Tait said, “It was a serious fire. Normally the area is secure, but there was one door found to be open when we arrived.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious and is being investigated.”
ADO Tait said it was yet another incident in which firefighters lives were needlessly put at risk.
A spokesman for Tayside Police said, “The fire is being treated as suspicious.”
Anyone who was in the area at the time or saw or heard anything suspicious should contact Tayside Police on 01307 302200 or speak to any officer. |
