Health “time bomb” claim

Droppings and litter around the multi.

The residents of a Dundee tower block are braving a health “time bomb” due to the council’s dereliction of duty, a council tenant claims.
Brian McConnachie, of Landsdowne Court in Lochee, says bird droppings near the building’s ventilation grills pose a serious risk to people inside their homes. The filth has also caked the path at the rear entrance, apparently due to birds resting on window ledges.

He said the council sent a team to clean up the mess — but failed to install measures to eradicate the problem in the long-term.

Mr McConnachie explained, “You’re talking months back I first raised this issue. It’s a dangerous situation — a time bomb. People are breathing this stuff in. Because of the size of the building, there is a great potential for contaminating a lot of people’s lungs. It’s an airborne problem. When it rains you can smell it.

“The air vents are between the two doors and the pigeons are dropping them from the window sills, down. It’s going onto the ground as well, meaning people are trailing this into their homes.

“There has also been syringes, needles, dirty nappies and other refuse there in the past.

“Remedial work has been done with a power wash, but it’s an ongoing concern.”

The city council said it was looking at ways to deter birds from the building.

A spokesman said, “We are already looking to take steps to clean up the area and we will also be looking to take preventative measures to stop pigeons landing there.”
