First family for cut-price compost

Councillors Helen Dick and Rod Wallace hand over the compost bin to Morven Scott and her children Ishbel and Lorne.

A Dundee family has become the first household to take part in a city council initiative to encourage people to use compost bins.
Morven Scott, of Forthill Road, was presented with a new composting unit today.

The council has entered into a partnership with the Waste and Resources Action Programme in the hope of getting local residents to buy the heavily subsidised, cut-price home composting units.

The campaign will see houses across the city receive postcards with information about the scheme and how to order a bin. They will be delivered free, and come with a guide to home composting. The council is aiming to help people reduce household waste by turning it into a useful product for their gardens.

Environmental services and sustainability convener Councillor Helen Dick said, “This is a tremendous initiative that builds on Dundee’s long-established recycling credentials. I hope as many people as possible will take advantage.”

For more information on the home composting scheme, call the Home Composting Helpline on 0845 6000 323 or Dundee City Council’s waste management department on 01382 432720.
