IT’S OUR 40,000 ISSUE

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford looks at the first copy of the 40,000th Tele to come off the presses.

TODAY IS the turn of the Tele to make the news.
When Dundee’s Lord Provost John Letford started the presses rolling at our Kingsway facility, it was for our 40,000th issue.

Many things have changed since the Tele was first printed back in 1877. But one thing has not changed — we exist because of our loyal readers and our advertisers and to both we say thanks.

To celebrate this special day we produced a special paper with a 24-page special supplement looking back at the stories we have brought you over the years.

We also have competitions, including the chance of a super £4000 Caribbean cruise. In addition we have giveaways plus a £1000 community anniversary award for young people.

The Lord Provost said, “Congratulations on your 40,000 edition. My earliest recollections of the Tele, like most football-minded persons, was reading from back to front.

“The readers’ letters was always, of course, an amusement — nowadays, of course, it’s interesting to see what the nice readers of Dundee are saying about me and the council. We usually come in for a bit of stick, but its always good reading.

“As far as I can remember I have always done the crossword and, after all these years, I seem to be on the same wavelength as the person who compiles it — that’s my story anyway!

“I have, since being Lord Provost, had the pleasure of working closely with the Evening Telegraph in many successful ventures, particularly charitable causes like the Asian earthquake disaster and the Romanian orphans amongst others.

“Long may the Tele continue to be an important part of our lives and long may I continue to be the first one in the house to read it as it pops through the letterbox.”
