| A 75-foot long section of the walkway at the station end has remained in place despite the fact the rest of the footbridge was cut down in August last year.
The work to remove the overpass — which has seen alternative pedestrian crossings created on South Marketgait between the railway station and Whitehall Crescent — was carried out as part of the Western Road Realignment Project, the first phase of the Ł270 million central waterfront redevelopment.
The remaining truncated spur makes for a strange sight as it rises from the north side of the station and reaches out towards South Marketgait.
The end of the walkway has been boarded up, but contains a door to a scaffold structure leading to the ground. The council said today the overpass is currently doubling as a temporary fire escape for staff who work in upstairs offices at the station.
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said the remains of the walkway would be demolished once agreement had been reached with First ScotRail to create a new fire escape for employees.
He said, “We acknowledge that what is left of the footbridge may look unusual, but the reason it has been retained like this is that it is still actually serving a purpose as a temporary fire escape for the station.
“There have been lengthy negotiations with First Scotrail about providing an alternative fire escape and as soon as this has been done the remainder of the walkway will be removed.”
First ScotRail said today the walkway was outwith the “lease perimeter” of the station and its removal was a matter for Dundee City Council.
A spokesperson for the rail operator said, “First ScotRail looks forward to the installation of an enhanced and improved access route to the station for the benefit of our customers.” |
