Kernaghan still at the helm
The prospect of Alan Kernaghan being in the Dens Park dugout when Clyde visit on Saturday still looked a distinct possibility today (writes Graeme Finnan).
Informed by the Dundee board on Monday that he was no longer wanted, Kernaghan’s departure, along with assistant Billy Kirkwood, seemed imminent.

However, with both parties still well apart in terms of a severance package, the managerial duo took training yesterday and, with today being the regular day off for the playing staff, are expected to report for duty tomorrow to prepare for the visit of the Bully Wee.

That’s a situation which is sure to bemuse the Dundee fans, but chief executive Peter Marr, who met with Kernaghan yesterday, admitted the matter was still some way off being resolved.

He said, “I have spoken to Alan about his position at the club and relayed my fears and those of the fans to him. I also highlighted the potential effect that the situation might have on season ticket sales.

“But there’s no progress been made since then. Until things are resolved one way or another he is still manager of the club.’’

It’s reported the Dens board have offered the manager £5000 to leave, while Kernaghan, whose contract is due to expire on May 31, 2007, is thought to be looking for five times that amount.

Amid all the managerial shenanigans, it was almost overlooked that Dundee became SFL U/19 Youth League champions yesterday with a 2-1 win over Albion Rovers at North End Park (see picture right and P 19).

Scott I. Robertson and Steven Watson netted the goals, while Kernaghan watched on from the sidelines.

One-time Dundee target Neil Watt today announced he was stepping down as Stranraer boss at the end of the season. Watt rejected the chance to move to Dens after Jim Duffy was sacked in August. The Dark Blues subsequently appointed Alan Kernaghan.

Return trip suits Craig
Dundee United boss Craig Brewster is looking forward to visiting his old club when the Tangerines make the trip to the Highlands on Saturday to tackle Inverness Caley (writes Graeme Finnan).
It will be the first time Craig has been back to the Caledonian Stadium since his switch to Tayside in January and, although he doesn’t expect a hostile reception from the home fans, he knows his men are in for a tough game.

“I enjoyed my time up there and worked with a lot of good people,” said Craig. “Charlie Christie has continued the good work and they just missed out on a top-six spot, so we are in for a hard game.”

Former Caley man Barry Robson won’t face his old team as he begins a three-game ban.

Free-to-leave pair Derek McInnes and Paul Ritchie added a bit of experience to a youthful United reserve side which beat Aberdeen 5-3 at Links Park yesterday. Goals by David Goodwillie (2), Robbie Feeney, Barry Callaghan and Willie Easton made up the Tangerines’ nap hand.

Hardie’s double blow
St Johnstone’s Martin Hardie been hit with a double suspension blow (writes James Masson).
He not only misses this Saturday’s home game against Hamilton and the last game of the season at St Mirren but also the first league game of next season.

However, initial fears that Kevin Rutkiewicz would also be banned for this week’s game against Accies have been allayed, although the big defender’s suspension will kick in for the following week and continue for the first league game next season.

Meanwhile, Saints’ Reserve League Cup Final away to St Mirren will be played on April 26 (7.30 pm).
