Overgate boost for crime-fighting scheme

Every retail unit in Dundee’s Overgate shopping centre is being signed up to a council-led crime-fighting partnership.

Lend Lease, the centre’s managers, said they were so impressed with the DUNCAN community safety scheme that they wanted to bulk-buy annual memberships for all its shops.

The council today described the move as a “massive boost” for DUNCAN, whose funding package from the Scottish Executive is due to run out this month.

“I am absolutely delighted that Overgate has made this decision to make an annual payment to DUNCAN for all the units trading in the centre,” said economic development convener Joe Morrow.

“This shows Overgate feels it is such a valuable way to help shoppers, retailers and staff go about their business with a much-reduced fear of crime.

“But I would also warn criminals that DUNCAN is also there to ensure they are caught and that appropriate action is taken.

“The city council and its partners in DUNCAN are hugely impressed by this move by Overgate, and I look forward to working even closer with them on how we keep Dundee city centre a family-friendly, crime-free destination.”

The Dundee Co-ordinated Anti-Crime Network was established in 2003 after Dundee received £130,000 from the Scottish Executive as part of their Safer Cities Funding programme.

Designed to tackle crime and improve community safety in city centres, the Safer Cities programme was extended to cities across Scotland and, last year, was also introduced to smaller towns.

DUNCAN radio-linked shops and businesses to help identify shoplifters, and excluded persistent offenders from members’ premises.

Those involved — other partners include the police — believe it has played a pivotal role in reducing shoplifting and other forms of crime.

The centre’s marketing manager, Kylie Wilson, said today, “Overgate has always been committed to providing a safe place for both guests and retailers.

“We are constantly reviewing our procedures to ensure we are providing the safest and most comfortable environment for an enjoyable shopping experience.

“The evolving partner-ship between DUNCAN and Overgate is the next step of this ongoing commitment of security to our guests, retailers and the city centre.”
