Letters - 27 March 2006
Let’s celebrate our own saint’s day
CAN anyone please tell me why this country goes mad on St Patrick’s Day? Bars are packed with people off their work.
When do you ever see the same happen on St Andrew’s Day?

There would be nothing better than the same media coverage, bars packed and people celebrating being Scottish.

I wonder how many even know that St Andrew’s day is on November 30. — Paul Guthrie, Wishart Archway, Dundee.

Fire hazard warning
THE WORKING man and woman will be fined for smoking in a pub or club, etc.

So publicans and proprietors of hotels, cafes, will lose out as people will start to entertain at home, resulting in unemployment.

Why are people sitting back like sheep accepting this breach of human rights? A compromise should have been reached.

What is wrong with responsible proprietors providing non-smoking and smoking rooms?

Despite the legislation, people will still smoke on the fly, creating a fire hazard and the poor publican will have to cough up a £2000 fine. — Baa Baa.

Phone number
THE POLICE, as I understand it, have stated they will not respond to calls about people smoking in pubs unless there is a disturbance.

Instead, complainants will be told to contact the council.

Could the Tele please print the council telephone number. — Non-Smoker.

[As stated previously, Dundee City Council is providing a dedicated hotline for complaints about breaches of the new smoking regulations.

The hotline is 01382 436236. There is also a national compliance line, which will run independently of the Dundee hotline, on 0845 1307 250.]

Putting smile back into Hilltown
AFTER A report labelled the area “Helltown”, it was very nice to read in the Tele about the Basic Moves project at the Mark Henderson Centre on Dundee’s Hilltown.

For from being “the worst place in Britain to stay”, programmes like Basic Moves is putting a smile back on the faces of everyone in the area. I wish them good luck with the programme fun games.

It was also good to see the happy, smiling faces of Hilltown residents joking with barber Tom Dolan as he closed his shop doors for the last time. This was much more like the real Hilltown than any report. — W. B. L, Ex-Hilltown.

Decade of misrule
IN A recent Holyrood debate, Allan Wilson MSP, speaking on behalf of the Scottish Executive, said, “Even if we allocate all North Sea revenues to Scotland, latest Executive figures show that under current arrangements Scotland runs a significant fiscal deficit.”

While I dispute the fact that Scotland would have a deficit with oil revenues (and by extension oil revenue could only make us better off than we are), it is clear from the Executive’s own figures that the UK has mis-managed the Scottish economy and created a “significant fiscal deficit”.

Yet the Scottish Executive is apparently happy to crow about it.

It is clear that only independence will allow us the fiscal autonomy required to correct the last decade and more of Labour/Liberal mis-rule. — The Watchman.

Bike stolen
FOUR BOYS entered my back garden at 7.45pm on Monday, March 20, and stole my grandson’s bike, which he had just had resprayed. It has a Union Jack saddle and black handlebars, silver blue frame with worded transfers. A small reward is offered to anyone who can give me information leading to its return. — I. Dailly, Blantyre Place, Dundee. 01382 811457.

Rink memories
I READ with interest the letters about Mr Key, who had the newsagent’s shop in North Lindsay Street. I have fond memories of going to the ice rink to see his son Marshall play with Dundee Tigers, along with Don Grant, Pat Donahoe, Jack (I think) Douglas around 1953/54. — Norrie Collins, Ajax, Ontario.

Staying with trials
I HAVE been taking part in clinical trials for around 10 years in Dundee and Edinburgh and had few side effects, unlike the unfortunate people in England who had the violent reaction to a test drug.

Now people are criticising the fact that volunteers are paid. Not everyone does it for the money.

You get peace, quiet and rest and are well cared for while taking part.

I will not stop doing it as I always say it is my sanctuary from bringing up six children. — Dundee Mother.

War costs
THE PRIME Minister says he is not prepared to pay £15 billion of taxpayers’ money to compensate people who have had their pension scheme stopped. There is no mention of the cost to taxpayers of the war in Iraq. — Unbalanced.

Police finance
WHAT ON earth is going on with the finance of Tayside Police? First we have the Florida visit with Chief Constable John Vine taking Councillor Young.

We then have double glazing saga, where Mr Vine has had £11,000 worth done to his home, courtesy of the taxpayer.

Now we have the top ranking police officers, including Mr Vine, using corporate credit cards, running up bills of £82,000 and claiming VAT when they should not have. — Overtaxed.

Well deserved
I HAVE just been told about the article in the evening telegraph about Kirkton Nursery School in Dundee.

The praise is thoroughly deserved.

I’ve been there for 18 months and the knowledge I have gained and the way I’ve been looked after cannot be matched. The staff are almost as good as my granddad. — Alexander Wilson.

Taxi plates
I REPLY to One Night Driver’s comments, and why is it a disgrace to issue taxi plates with wheelchair access?

If you wish to put one of these vehicles on the road, do it. If you don’t, then don’t.

He or she also claims to make money only on a Saturday night but I can earn at other times. — Happy E7 Driver.
