| Potential projects were considered including that of a BMX bike track and even urban community woodland and the city council will be asking users and the community for their views.
Councillor Chris Hind, convener for leisure and communities, said that while in the fullness of time it would be nice to develop these areas within Caird Park, he emphasised there was no firm plan at present.
There were originally two nine-hole golf courses and an 18-hole golf course at Caird Park and in the late 80s early 90s, for reason of economy, one of the nine-hole courses was closed.
The opportunity was taken then to improve the remaining course by reconfiguring to include the best of both courses.
The areas of fairway, tees and greens which are not used and formed part of the original nine-hole course, have been left in a natural state.
A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council said, “In terms of the Caird Park master plan, potential projects were considered for these areas including a BMX track and even urban community woodland.
“There are no plans to take back the area into use as part of the golf course and any proposals would be subject to consultation with users of the park and the community.”
In the past, Caird Park has been tipped for redevelopment after it was suggested as a site for a 30,000-seater new build stadium to be shared by both city football clubs.
That was five years ago, when the possibility of Dundee being one of the proposed Scottish venues for the failed bid with Ireland to host the European Football Championships in 2008.
At the time the secretary of Caird Park Golf Club called for full and open consultation over the proposed Euro 2008 stadium for Dundee and the effect it would have on the course.
The stadium and associated parking and transport access would have been one of the biggest building developments in Dundee for many years.
The proposed site would have meant the end for football and rugby pitches at that end of the park, notwithstanding that several holes on the golf course — probably the fourth, fifth and sixth — would have been ripped out and replaced elsewhere in the park. |
