| Artist David Mach wants to put Dundee on the artistic map by creating the 90-foot sculpture on Dundee University’s Hawkhill campus.
A nine-foot model of the proposed ‘Bio-Colossus’ sculpture will go on display at Dundee Contemporary Arts this week.
If approved, the real-life model would stand arm-on-hip between Dundee of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and the neighbouring Matthew Building, which houses the department of town and regional planning.
The sculpture has been designed to reflect the world-leading research carried out into the life sciences in the city and features thousands of panels that have science-based images imposed on them.
The scale model will be the focal point of an exhibition to mark the conclusion of the university’s Inspiration and Discovery programme.
The exhibition will also give the public a chance to view plans for a purpose built ‘inspiration studio’ to be constructed by the architecture students and will house future art/science initiatives.
Also on display will be works by Professor Elaine Shemilt, John McGhee — who explores the use of 3-D visualisation techniques to enhance medical scan data — and Dr Paul Andrews, who is investigating the mechanisms of chromosome segregation in human cancer cells.
The exhibition opens to the public on Friday and runs until March 31.
