Road closure causing delays

Traffic builds up at the St Michaels junction today.

Fife commuters heading to Dundee were faced with congestion today — the first weekday of a two-week closure of the main road between Tayport and the Tay Road Bridge.
And it could be worse tomorrow, as yesterday’s wintry weather meant traffic levels were lower than normal.

Motorists from Tayport heading for the bridge have to take a lengthy diversion via the B945 to the St Michaels junction and on to the A914, as Albert Street is closed from Scotscraig Drive to Braid Road for resurfacing work.

Several bus services are operating alternative routes, and the diversion means there is extra traffic using the St Michaels junction.

Fife Council’s area transportation manager, Derek Crowe, said there had been some congestion and bus drivers had encountered problems negotiating the tight turns at the junction, adding to delays.

The roadworks began on Saturday, and Mr Crowe said, “With the weather yesterday the travelling public mostly stayed at home, and again today there’s been a slow start.

“Once it is operating fully with commuters we will have a better understanding.”

He added, “We had looked at putting temporary traffic lights at the St Michaels junction, but our feeling was that that would have caused congestion 24/7.”

However, he said traffic lights or police officers directing traffic may have to be employed.
