| One resident contacted the Evening Telegraph to express fears someone would be hurt or even killed if the situation was allowed to continue.
“The rate cars travel down Peddie Street in particular is scandalous,” he said.
“I cross the road near Blackness Primary and it’s scandalous what’s happening. I’ve got young children and I worry about them, but old people are at risk too.”
He continued, “I’ve contacted the police and the council regarding this, but they’ve refused to do anything about it.
“They should consider putting in speed bumps — it would be money well spent.”
Logie Councillor Jim Barrie admitted high speeds had been a problem in the area for some time and the council were working closely with the police to try and stop it.
“About a year ago I had a similar complaint about Rosefield Street and we actually put speed monitors in place,” he said.
“Surprisingly the average speed was not as high as we thought.
“However, the police have been very active in the Blackness Road area because it’s been very busy — probably due to roadworks elsewhere — and some of the speeds being reached there are quite dangerous.”
He added, “If any residents wish to contact me regarding this matter I’d be happy to talk to them.”
Tayside Police Traffic Inspector Gordon Taylor also acknowledged that high speed had been a persistent problem in the West End, and issued a call to motorists to think of the safety of others.
“Certainly we are aware there has been inappropriate speeds being reached by vehicles in the area,” he said.
“There has been close attention given to it and we will continue to do that in a bid to modify the behaviour of drivers.”
He added, “I would appeal to drivers to be aware of their driving in any street or road in the city centre and drive appropriately.” |
