| Breathing Space — the free and confidential telephone line for people across Scotland who are feeling low or depressed — took part in the Space to Breathe seminar held at the West Park Centre.
The seminar — which was open to students — was organised to encourage the university community to deal with any problems they may be facing that might cause them to feel depressed.
There are around 900 suicides and undetermined deaths across Scotland every year, and a significant percentage of these are young men.
Tony McLaren, service co-ordinator for Breathing Space, said, “Young people attending university will often find themselves in a whole new environment. They may have left home for the first time, have to organise finances and cope with new relationships. At times issues can become overwhelming and seem too much to cope with.
“This is where Breathing Space can offer a listening ear, offer advice and direct callers to agencies in their area who can offer help for more specific problems.”
Breathing Space offer their service to anyone, but in particular target young men, who often find it harder to express how they are feeling and share problems with family and friends.
The organisation currently receives around 2000 to 2500 calls a month.
Callers can contact the service between 6pm and 2am from anywhere in Scotland, and research has show it is at this time of night when the pressure of problems can become unbearable for some.
Tony added, “I am pleased we are in Dundee again following the successful information session at the Caird Hall in January.
“It is important the awareness of the service is high among young people and the event at Dundee University, together with support from Dundee United, is helping to do just that.”
Breathing Space has advertising space at Tannadice and some of their players turned out with youth coach Stevie Campbell today to back the event.
