Market an earner for Perth — study

Hamish Coutts of Big Highland Beef dishes out meaty delights to customer Jimmy Dye at Saturday’s Perth farmers market.

An economic impact study of Perth’s monthly farmers market has shown that every £1 spent there on local produce generates an estimated £2.59 for the local economy, compared with just £1.40 generated by every £1 spent at a supermarket.
A total of 62 farmers markets are held in Scotland every week. Perth’s was the first, in April 1999, and is considered the benchmark for quality, range and size.

The report says that 68% of respondents visited Perth farmers market four or more times a year — and 86% had a favourable reaction towards it.

More than two-thirds of customers said a wide range of fresh local produce was the reason they attended.

Despite the chilly weather, Saturday’s market in the city centre was again successful.
