Happiness is an employer called Gore
Employees at WL Gore & Associates’ Dundee-based plant had plenty reason to be cheerful today, as the firm retained top spot as the best company to work for in the UK.
The textiles company’s 110 Dundee-based employees praised Gore’s innovative approach to staffing, which has led to them all becoming “associates”, helping the company secure top spot in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For survey for the third straight year.

Perhaps best known for creating the outdoor clothing range Gore-Tex, the company has expanded into various fields, with the Dundee plant specialising in the production of electronic connectors. However, despite its move into a variety of technological areas its commitment to staff appears to be working, with the survey’s judging panel unanimous in their praise for the company’s passion towards its 425 Scottish-based staff, which they described as being “as watertight as its products.”

Coming out tops in five out of eight employment categories, more than 90% of associates said they believed they made a valuable contribution to the firm’s success, while 93% said they’d miss Gore if they left.

One long-serving Dundee associate said today that retaining top spot was “fantastic news” for the Dundee Technology Park plant, where Gore will celebrate its 20th anniversary in the city later this year.

Ann Gillies, who’s been an associate since 1975, said one of the keys to success at Gore was the fact no one was ever made to feel they were there simply to make up numbers.

Ms Gillies said the atmosphere within the workplace was excellent, with the company’s low turnover of staff providing evidence of a happy team.

Last year the firm made profits of £14.6 million on its UK revenue of £105.9m, and spent £48,000 on social events, as well as supporting workers in charity events.
