| Amy, who lives in Dundee with mum and dad Vicky and Andrew, has a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma, which affects only 100 children in Britain a year.
She was diagnosed in September 2002 and given just a 1% chance of surviving by doctors.
Since then she has suffered from multiple tumours in her bone marrow, skull, adrenal glands and liver, undergone successive chemotherapy treatments, spent the best part of a year in Edinburgh Sick Children’s Hospital and had regular visits to Ninewells Hospital for intensive and intrusive treatment.
She has undergone more than 40 blood transfusions, a bone marrow transplant and last year had brain surgery to remove a tumour, which also required four weeks of radiotherapy.
Last year the Lows were able to raise money for a planned trip to Disneyworld in Florida, only for more hospital treatment to mean that Amy was unable to take the trip. However, the family were able to go to Disneyland in Paris by road later in the year.
The next stage of Amy’s gruelling treatment regime requires that she undergo a particularly virulent form of radiotherapy, known as MIBG therapy, at Glasgow’s Beatson Oncology Centre in three weeks’ time.
However, the dose of radiation required is so great that her parents cannot be with her which makes Mamy’s presence all the more important.
Her mum explained, “The treatment requires Amy to be placed in a lead-lined chamber and anything she takes into this will also be irradiated and couldn’t be handled safely for months, so we’ve got a real problem as she will not have the treatment without Mamy.
“So, a convincing substitute is required, but Keel Toys, the company who manufactured the rag dolls like Mamy, unfortunately no longer make them. We’ve searched everywhere for a doll the same and have found some similar, but they would never be convincing.
“There are a number of sizes but Mamy is 37 centimetres tall, with a lilac top, pink feet and an orange brown colour. We’re hoping someone out there might have a doll like this who can take Mamy’s place.”
