Dixon avoids distractions
Paul Dixon has promised neither the prospect of Scottish Cup glory or a sore head will be distractions when Dundee return to First Division action at Queen of the South tonight (writes Tom Duthie).
Last night’s cup semi-final draw paired the Dark Blues with Gretna — if they can take care of business in the quarter-final replay against Hamilton Accies next week.

And, despite the wads of cash millionaire owner Brooks Mileson has spent on the Second Division leaders, there is no doubt Dundee now fancy their chances of going all the way to a final date with Hibs or Hearts.

Even so, Dixon, who was knocked cold in the opening minutes of Saturday's draw at Hamilton, has pledged no one will be thinking about the cup until after league dates tonight and at the weekend.

“We have this game and one against Hamilton on Saturday before we meet them next week, and that is all we will be concentrating on. Once they are out of the way, we can think about the replay and maybe a semi-final, but not before,” he said.

“Of course, our minds have been on the cup and reaching the last four would be great, but we are professionals and we have to act professionally.”

Dixon was almost forced off in the opening minutes at New Douglas Park when he was knocked cold, but, having completed the 90 minutes, is ready for action again at Palmerston — where he has a score to settle.

“My head was a bit sore after Saturday. All I remember was that one minute I was jumping for a high ball and the next I was lying on the pitch getting treatment.”

“I was OK to continue, though, and I can recall everything that went on during the game, so I will be fine

“We lost to Queen of the South at Dens earlier this month when we definitely should have won.

“We were 2-1 up, well in control and let it slip, so we want to make up for that. We still want to keep picking up points to get higher up the league to somewhere like we should be.”

The big selection issue for boss Alan Kernaghan is whether or not he uses fit-again Lee Wilkie from the start.

Chances are Wilkie’s likely appearance, for the first time since snapping a cruciate ligament last April, will be from the bench, but his very presence in the squad is seen as a boost.

“I think for him especially, but the team as a whole, it is a big thing to have him involved again,” said Alan.

As well as Wilkie, returning to the squad is the cup-tied Colin Marshall, but wide man Steven Robb and goalkeeper Kelvin Jack are still out injured.

Garry Brady is also struggling because of an ankle knock and could sit this one out.
