| At a ceremony at Dudhope Park attended by representatives of the various council departments involved in the project, along with local skaters, Councillor Farquhar predicted that the new, free facility would be a great asset to the city.
He said, “It’s wonderful to see this complex project come to fruition.
“The level of community consultation and input into design from the skaters themselves has resulted in a truly unique skate park.
“I am sure that this free facility will be well used by all enthusiasts from Dundee and further afield.”
He added, “The availability of this new facility will also hopefully mean an end to skaters in the city centre.”
The idea for the new skate park came from a group called Skaters With A Vision, which was set up by young people throughout the city who have an interest in skating and boarding.
It identified a substantial demand for a free outdoor facility and held discussions with local groups and potential users to ascertain their views on the best location and design.
SWAV received almost 300 opinion postcards which showed that around 90% of the people who responded were in favour of a single large, centrally located skate park and 70% wanted it to be in Dudhope Park.
The skate park measures 1000 square metres of concrete and incorporates a street section, bowls, wallows, ramps, flatbanks and quarter pipes.
The council’s leisure and arts department provided £170,000 of the overall costs with the other £60,000 coming from the Scottish Executive’s Quality of Life Fund. |
