Angus school plans to be considered
Members of Angus Council’s development control committee will this week give the go-ahead for a programme of demolition and construction which will see the creation of a new secondary school for Carnoustie.
Committee members meet on Thursday to consider a report by planning director Alex Anderson in which he recommends that approval be given to plans to demolish much of the existing school and replace it with a new two and three-storey building on a site accessed from Shanwell Road.

The scheme is part of a wide-ranging £50 million scheme, in which Angus Council has entered into Public-Private Partnerships, to create 21st century schools for Forfar and Carnoustie.

Under the plans for Carnoustie High, all that will be retained of the existing building will be the theatre, PE and music block, which are considered worth incorporating into the new development.

Mr Anderson’s report states that in terms of its style the new building will be similar to the one it replaces.

In response to representations from Sportscotland, who described the school rebuild project as ‘an opportunity to increase the quality and capacity of the retained playing fields’, the committee will consider the provision of a full-sized, floodlit synthetic pitch suitable for a wide range of team sports.

Councillors are also set to give the go-ahead for the demolition of a Forfar school this week.

Langlands School is to be bulldozed and a new school is to be built on the site under the schools improvement project.

The new Langlands School is due to be completed by August 2008.

A report to this week’s meeting of the development control committee said councillors should give the green light for the old building to be pulled down.

It said, “The proposal involves the demolition of the existing primary school and its replacement with a new, two-stream primary school.

“Apart from the main hall and dining area, the buildings are single-storey with pitched roofs reaching a height of six metres and rising to 8.5 metres over the hall and dining area.”
