| Out goes the familiar white collar and tie, and instead the boys in blue will become men-and women-in black, with black T-shirts to be worn under either jackets or new body armour, which is also being introduced.
Modern style cargo pants with patch pockets on the thighs will also be issued.
Police say the new uniform is designed to be practical, taking into account the different weather conditions and types of work officers are faced with.
Safety, comfort and visibility were also key factors in arriving at the new style, which is being introduced across Scotland this year.
Police hope to save on the cost of kitting out officers through national procurement economies of scale.
Assistant Chief Constable Iain MacLeod said the new look is suited to the demands of policing 21st Century streets.
“I am confident it will prove popular with our officers and hope that it will be favourably received by the public,” he said.
High visibility jackets will still be worn, but otherwise officers will be dressed all in black.
Non-operational officers will continue to wear collar and tie or cravat, with a pullover jersey or fleece jacket, which replaces the current blouson-style jacket. |
