| An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze, which broke out in a six-flat block in Ballindean Terrace shortly before 2.30am.
Firefighters spent over an hour tackling the flames and reassuring residents who remained in their homes.
Among them was John Low (38), who told the Tele he would never have been able to get his eight kids — some of them toddlers — out through the smoke-logged close.
“I woke up during the night because there was an alarm going off, and that’s when I first smelled the smoke,” said John.
“I dived around the flat checking in case the bairns had started something, then when I opened the front door the smoke came in and it was black in the close.
“I shut it again and went to the window. There was a bloke outside who had stopped his car because he had seen smoke, and he shouted he thought there was a fire in the back of the close. There was no way we could have got down the stairs. The firefighters came and asked if we were alright and if we wanted to be evacuated, but we stayed in the flat. It was scary experience.”
Anyone with information on the fire is asked to contact police on Dundee 223200. |
