Immigration shambles
LETTER writer Frans Oosenburgh states that any citizen of any EU member state can work in any Euro country. This is correct.
However, they are also entitled to use our already overburdened social security, welfare and national health services, increasing waiting times for us.

This includes those who fought for this country and now can’t get an operation without a lengthy wait and who are burdened with rising taxes to pay for the Government’s hare-brained schemes such as subsidising Polish airlines to bring people to Scotland.

How many Scottish people are queuing up to go to Poland for work?

Your reader’s comment that economic immigrants will work from dawn to dusk proves my point that this will erode workers’ rights.

Our immigration policies have cost the taxpayers and are a shambles.

Ambition by immigrants is a great thing, but not at the expense of citizens of this country.

Dundee has worse social problems than many in Europe. Charity begins at home is a good old and true saying, and our parliamentarians should take note.

If a referendum was called tomorrow to come out of Europe I think the answer would be a very definite yes.

Ethnic diversity, both socially and culturally, is good for any country. However, when that country’s poorest citizens start to suffer through unemployment, lack of proper housing and social funding, then it is time to limit immigration to both EU and non-EU citizens. — K. S.

Broke ankleon footpath

The Laird Street footpath.

I WROTE to Dundee City Council regarding the state of the footpath on Laird Street, from Brackens school to the semi-detached houses on the west side, which is a disgrace. It has been like that since the scheme went up.

I broke my ankle and ended up in Ninewells Hospital having seven pins put in it.

The council disregarded my letter, but something must be done. — Mr A. Robertson, Pitroddie Gardens, Dundee.

Dog owners must be responsible
DOG owners who walk their pets in the Finlarig Place/Finlarig Terrace area of Fintry, Dundee, should act in a responsible way by picking up after their pet has fouled the pavement.

There is an automatic fine for not doing this.

When you are walking at night you just cannot see where this mess is.

I have a dog myself and clean up afterwards.

The bags cost you nothing and are readily available at any housing office, community centre or library.

We also need a bin at the top of Fintry Crescent/Finlarig Terrace junction for dog pooh bags. — Fed Up.

Dog fouling
WHEN will something be done about dog fouling in St Marys, Dundee?

Every street you walk in is covered in it.

The owners wouldn’t let dogs do the same in their own homes. — Pet Owner Who Cleans Up.

Concealed addiction
I FAIL to see what is honourable about Charles Kennedy’s resignation.

For over three years the former Lib-Dem leader concealed an addiction and in so doing misled the British people.

He did this even though he spent most of the General Election accusing Tony Blair of the same thing over Iraq.

Personal sympathies aside, Charlie Kennedy has been exposed as yet another political hypocrite. — C. E. C.

Ticket is no laughing matter
I USED to laugh, reading the headlines in the national Press about traffic wardens in other cities, dishing out parking tickets “willy nilly”. Ambulances, funeral cars and fire engines all fell foul.

I thought, thank goodness for Dundee and commonsense. That is until my husband, a tradesman with the council, came home from his work with a parking ticket.

Had he parked on double yellow lines, parked to close to a junction or forgot to put a ticket on his van? No. He had parked in a resident permit area in Menzieshill because all the public parking was taken.

Now he is faced with a £30 fine. What is he supposed to do? Should he carry bath and kitchen units hundreds of yards, or drive about until a space becomes available? If attending a burst pipe or faulty heating, should he just leave it for another day when parking might not be so congested?

I thought we were all working for the same team. — Angry Tradesman’s Wife.

Found MP3 player
I FOUND an MP3 player on January 14 at Camperdown Park. Phone 07812 411023 with its details. — A. H., Dundee.
