Amazing escape

The overturned car and felled lamppost at the scene of the accident.

A man walked away from his car uninjured this morning after colliding with a 25-foot lamppost in Dundee, writes Laurie Watson.
The car is believed to have skidded and rolled onto its roof before crashing into the lamppost at the junction of Claverhouse Road and Barns of Claverhouse shortly after 8.30.

The man, believed to be local, was travelling east.

He was trapped in the car for approximately 15 minutes.

The Heavy Rescue Unit from Tayside Fire and Rescue attended the scene but found on arrival the man had already been helped to safety through the rear of the Ford Fiesta.

Paramedics at the scene, who are believed to have helped to free the man, treated him for shock before leaving him with Tayside Police.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said, “The man was fortunate to have escaped without any injury.

He remained with police officers at the scene until a member of his family came along to pick him up.”

The accident left the busy thoroughfare closed with police having to divert traffic, which included many Dundonians returning to work after the festive break, through Caird Park and onto the Kingsway.

The road was re-opened before 10 am after the damaged vehicle had been removed and a representative from Tayside Contracts had visited the scene to ensure the lamppost was not a danger to the public.
