| A spokesperson for travel company Thomson, which has branches located in the Overgate shopping centre and Broughty Ferry, said people booking their summer holidays tended to be opting for Egypt, the Red Sea and Turkey.
He said, “Egypt is good value for money and is seen as a new resort and a bit glamorous — and there’s the guarantee of good weather.
“Turkey has been popular for a while and is booming.”
He added that Turkey had wide appeal because there are three different airports that tourists can fly into — Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, Antalya International Airport and Dalaman International Airport.
Travel Mood in Reform Street said they were also busy.
A member of staff said this time of year was undoubtedly a popular time for those wishing to book holidays, as they fancy venturing abroad to experience different cultures following the festive season.
Thomas Cook, which has branches in City Square and Broughty Ferry, forecast that British families will be taking more holidays, more often and to more exotic destinations this year.
They listed their most popular holiday destinations as Greece, Majorca, Turkey, Cyprus and Ibiza.
A spokesperson said that across the UK, there has been an explosion in low cost short haul flights, the use of the Internet to book DIY holidays, and a growth in overseas property ownership.
She added, “Another growing trend is that families are choosing to take several shorter holidays rather than one big summer break, and with families being bombarded with potential deals in the traditional post-Christmas holiday booking period, the images are of more exotic and unusual destinations rather than the usual holiday hotspots.
“That is because more and more families are choosing to try out different holiday locations rather than stick with the tried and tested.
“Looking ahead to the next five years, the forecast also predicts this taste for the new expanding into greater adventurous activity holidays, where families reject the sun lounger for swimming dolphins, trekking and helicopter rides.” |
