Gun terror in Perth
Pupils at a Perth primary school were left terrified when confronted by teenagers brandishing a gun, writes Dave Lord.
Parents have said youngsters at Kinnoull Primary were shot at with a BB pellet gun. Nobody was injured as a result of the incident, but police say they are taking it “very seriously” and anyone with information has been urged to contact them as a matter of urgency.

One local father has called for a full investigation into an incident he described as “absolutely horrifying”.

The concerned father told the Evening Telegraph, “When I picked up my kids from school, I could not believe what they were saying.

“They said three teenagers had been firing at them from the road next to the school.

“Apparently, they were shooting at both the school windows and the youngsters themselves.”

He said the incident had happened at about 12.30 pm yesterday, as pupils played in the school grounds.

He added, “It was not a spud gun that these kids had, it was a BB pellet gun, which can be extremely dangerous. They are certainly not toys.

“You hear about people being seriously injured after being hit with them, I believe victims can even be blinded.

“As far as I am concerned, this was an absolutely horrifying incident and I hope the police treat is as such.”

The father said he had since spoken to other Kinnoull Primary parents and found they all shared his concerns.

He added, “You do not expect something like this to happen at Kinnoull.

“It has come as a real shock. I have spoken to other parents and we are building up a picture of exactly what happened.

“It would seem the perpetrators were all aged about 15 or 16 and they apparently shot at kids in the playground, before chasing a couple of pupils who were heading home to get changed before their Christmas party.

“My kids said they were also shooting at the school’s windows, which, again, is very worrying.”

The parent hopes those responsible will be quickly brought to justice, adding, “This is very frightening stuff. My kids were terrified.

“It is absolutely unbelievable and I hope it is taken very seriously. Those responsible must be caught and I hope it is a priority.”

A mother of two children at Kinnoull Primary also outlined her concerns.

“When I thought about what had happened last night, I was ill with worry,” she said.

“At first I thought the kids might be embellishing the details, but it is obviously very frightening. I am really concerned and am just glad the school has now broken up for the holidays.”

A spokesman for Tayside Police gave details of the incident and asked members of the public to provide further information.

He said, “At about 12.40 pm on Thursday, we received a call from a member of staff at Kinnoull Primary reporting that three male youths had been seen near to the school in possession of a pellet-type gun.

“As yet, we have received no complaint that anyone was threatened by these youths or fired upon.

“But we are treating the incident very seriously and would urge anyone with information to contact us immediately.

“We do not consider pellet or BB guns to be toys because, in the wrong hands, they possess the potential to cause real injury to people and damage to property.

“Anyone who can assist us with out inquiries into this matter should call us on 01738 621141 or speak to any officer.”

By the time of going to press, nobody at Perth and Kinross Council had made any comment.
