A “world-leading” Dundee firm had school pupils in the city carrying logs over a river and inching towards an invisible bridge today —without leaving the classroom, writes Steven Bell.
Second year pupils at St Saviour’s High were using the latest in educational software to learn team building, communication and leadership skills.

Now the software, designed by Team Play Learning Dynamics, is to be introduced across other schools in Dundee, as the firm expands with a £65,000 injection from Michelin Development Fund.

The Faraday Business Centre-based company plans to create a further six jobs with the receipt of the last £20,000 chunk of the cash in April.

Company chief executive Jim Piggot said, “TPLD incorporated in September 2002, and is already considered a world leader in game-based learning.

“There are very few companies in Scotland with such a unique business proposition, and very few which require such diverse multi-disciplines, such as psychologists and game designers.

“We have been able to combine network and games technology in a way which meets the need that many organisations have — finding better ways of training people.”

Around 100 second year pupils at St Saviour’s have been using the company’s Eduteams software as part of their computer classes.

Principal teacher of computing at the school, Heather Hopes, said, “The way the pupils have responded to working together in teams, using problem-solving skills, and communicating with each other is fascinating.”
