| Tayside Recyclers, based at South Dudhope Mill in Douglas Street, collects unwanted goods from businesses and individuals then repairs or recycles them and finds buyers for the end products.
But now the company is planning to take its environmentally-friendly firm one step further by transforming its building into a state-of-the-art beacon for green technology in Dundee.
The plans, drawn up by Dundee architect Sam Penn, include improving the building’s insulation and thermal efficiency and adding solar panels and a wind turbine.
Now Tayside Recyclers hopes to raise the money needed to fund the improvements through grants from the Scottish Executive, the EU and other environmental organisations.
Manager Doug McLaren said, “We are in the process of piecing all the financing together, but we are committed to making these improvements, even if it involves taking out a bank loan.
“Everyone at the company feels something has to be done to counter the waste of electricity and fossil fuels. We have all been taken aback by the initial plans, which are inspiring and visionary.
“We are making improvements to the building that are not only more environmentally friendly but also financially sound as they will substantially reduce our heating bills for years to come.”
The plans were backed by Mid-Scotland MSP Murdo Fraser, who visited the company today. He said, “Social enterprises like Tayside Recyclers are changing the way we tackle social and environmental issues. It operates just like any other business, generating all its income from trade and receiving no grant aid or subsidy.
“However, unlike most other businesses, its mission is about conserving resources and protecting the environment.
“Not only will the centre be a beacon to others in the area, it will reduce the company’s running costs and allow it to develop new business services.”
