Dodging traffic second nature
I READ the story, headlined Madness, about Craigie High School pupils in Dundee “dicing with death” on the roads in the Craigiebank area.

I do not condone this, but we have a new breed of youngster, who fear nothing, think they are immortal and will jump in front of any car as they have no choice.

Craigie High pupils have been “dicing with death” for years, and will continue to do so until Dundee City Council does something to keep those young people safe.

Dodging traffic on a daily basis has become second nature to them as there are no crossing patrols or traffic lights.

Some 10 years ago I wrote to the Tele about the problem, suggesting this “blackspot” was an accident waiting to happen and suggested peak-time traffic lights.

At that time I talked to Councillor John Corrigan, who still represents the area, and he assured me he “had the problem in hand”. — Margaret Fraser.

Working a waste of time
I HAVE been on my own with my five-year-old son since he was eight months old, a similar situation to letter writer Fed-Up and Skint.

I have been ready to go back to work for the past three years, but, as I have had no-one to look after my son during nursery/ school holidays, I had to wait until this year.

I have to pay £48 per week rent, plus £14 per week Council Tax, and I also pay £10 per week for childcare, plus £15 per week to a social fund loan.

From £110 working tax credit and child tax credit, I am left with just over £20 a week.

And because I am working I no longer get free school meals and I also have bus fares to pay.

It’s a waste of time working. — Also Fed-Up.

Stolen memories
MY HOUSE was broken into on Wednesday and a video camera and case, containing cassettes of family memories, were stolen.

My eldest daughter, a serving soldier in Iraq and not due home until May, was to receive these as part of her Christmas.

If anyone is offered these items or finds them, please contact me on 01382 228545 (day) or 01382 451665 (evening). — S. T.

Disgusting pavements
TAKING NURSERY children for a walk, I was disgusted by the amount of dog’s dirt in Fairbairn Street, Dundee.

We take the children out to give them experience of the environment, and help promote safety by encouraging them to walk close to the wall, but how are they meant to walk safely if they have to avoid stepping in muck?

If owners feel their dog has to “go”, take it on to the road rather than allowing it to foul the pavement. — Disgusted.

Playing politics
I POINT out to D. A. B. it was Tony Blair who played politics with the 90-day detention issue.

Those against were willing to work with the Government to come up with a compromise to strengthen the Bill, but Mr Blair was more interested in using a defeat for PR purposes. — Political Watcher.

No answer
I SPENT two days trying to get through to the number on a postcard left by Royal Mail when they tried to deliver a parcel while I was out.

It was engaged from 7.30am until 12.30pm.

What kind of service is this? Is the line manned or are they just intent on their customers travelling to their depot at Ivory Place to collect their parcels? — M. M., Dundee.

Pleasant attitude heartening
I LOST £10 while in Tesco Metro shopping, so when I went to pay, I was embarrassed as I had to use money I had been given as a Christmas present.

Outside, two high school ladies gave me the money. I thanked them, but after a wee gossip with them, forgot to ask their names.

I am over 90 years old and would like them to know their pleasant attitude was heartening and I wish them well. — Grateful Pensioner.

Ugly buildings
ONCE AGAIN Dundee City Council ignores the opinions of the people. It approved a plan to demolish a hideous building in Riverside Drive.

However, it allows equally unsuitable buildings on this “prime route” into the city centre. How can buildings from five to eight storeys improve Riverside or the view from the Perth Road?

There are enough ugly buildings there without adding to them.

Let the parks department take over. — Patricia Brown, Dundee.

Patronising salesman
I WAS infuriated when, in a car dealership, I asked the salesman a sensible question about the different models.

His patronising reply was, “It’s all to do with engine, but I know you girls don’t like to talk about that technical stuff.”

I will certainly not be returning there and I hope other dealers in Dundee credit females with a bit more intelligence. — Female Driver.

A bright Christmas

DRIVING IN the Maryfield area of Dundee, I was struck by a wonderful illuminated Santa in one of the gardens.

He seems to be a very cheery fellow and I’m pleased to see so many households in the city making sure we have a bright and merry Christmas this year. — Transit, Dundee.
