Madness — Dundee pupils playing chicken
Pupils of a Dundee secondary school are “dicing with death” by playing chicken with motorists, writes Graeme Cleland.
In one incident this week, a motorist was driving along Brington Road, next to Craigie High School, when a pupil in the middle of the road faced down his car.

The driver said, “There was a lot of them standing in the road and this boy decided to run straight at my car head on.

“I managed to slam on the brakes and he dived out of the way at the last minute.

“If I hadn’t been paying close attention I would have hit him. His mates just laughed.

“They don’t seem to have any respect for traffic and seem to think they can stand in the middle of the road.

“It’s madness.”

The driver said he had seen this sort of thing happening regularly in the Strips of Craigie area and believed it was only a matter of time before someone was badly hurt.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said they had received a complaint yesterday about youths playing on the road near to the Scott Fyfe roundabout

She added, “Officers immediately attended but there was no sign of the youths.

“Anyone who thinks playing on a road is acceptable is mistaken.

“Not only could this result in their own death but also the death of other innocent road users.”

The spokeswoman continued, “Pedestrians should only cross the road where it is safe to do so and should at no time take any unnecessary and dangerous risks.

“Officers will be giving the area attention and anyone caught endangering lives will be dealt with accordingly.”

The area has been labelled “one of the worst accident blackspots in Scotland” by a retired police inspector. A string of incidents, including a recent death, has led to calls for a pedestrian crossing to be put in place at the roundabout.

A spokesman for Dundee City Council told the Tele pupils at Craigie High were encouraged to use safe places to cross and were reminded about road safety measures.
