More going on to study
More than half of all school leavers in Dundee go on to study at university or college, according to the latest figures released by the Scottish Executive today, writes Lynne Stewart.

There was also a decrease in the number of youngsters registered as unemployed after leaving school.

Those categorised as unemployed and seeking work or training was down 4% from 17% last year to 13%, while 2% are unemployed and not seeking employment or training, which is the same amount as last year, but an 8% drop from 2003/04.

The destination of the remainder is not known.

Nationally, the proportion of young people entering further or higher education has risen slightly from 50% in 2003/04 to 52% in 2004/05.

The proportion of leavers entering employment has also increased by 2% to 27%, while the proportion who are unemployed and seeking employment or training has fallen from 16% to 13%.

The proportion of leavers entering training outwith employment remains the same as 2003/04 at 5%, and the percentage in the ‘destination unknown’ category has decreased by 1%.

A higher proportion of females than males entered higher or further education (59% and 45% respectively) while a higher proportion of males than females entered employment (31% and 22% respectively).

Of the leavers who were unemployed, 12% of males were seeking employment as opposed to 8% of females, however there was no difference in the proportion of males and females who were unemployed and not seeking employment (both at 3%).

There were 1307 school leavers in Angus with a 3% increase of those entering full-time higher or further education.

A further 4% entered training and 21% of those found jobs — 3% more than last year.

There was good news on the unemployment front for school leavers in Angus with a drop of 5% in those unemployed and seeking work or training, while the number of jobless school leavers not seeking work or training stayed at 2% — the same as the previous year.

The destination of the remaining 1% is not known.

In Fife, a further 5% of the 4087 school leavers went on to university or college in 2004/05 compared to the previous year. 5% of those went into training opportunities and 21% found jobs — 2% more than the previous year.

There was a fall in those unemployed after leaving school, with those jobless and looking for employment or training falling from 16% last year to 9% this year and those unemployed and not looking for work remaining at 2% — the same as the previous year.

The destination of 3% is not known.

In Perth & Kinross there was an increase of 4% in those entering full-time higher or further education of the 1401 school leavers, while 3% entered training. An additional 2% found work compared to the previous year.
