Dundee street plunge horror

The scene in Lochee High Street.

A 23-year-old man died in Dundee today after slipping from a roof as he tried to flee from police who had gone to question him, writes Graham Huband.
The man climbed out of the window of a four-storey building above Moss Pharmacy in Lochee’s High Street as police arrived at the door.

It is understood the officers were speaking to a relative of the dead man as he made his way on to the roof of the building.

The man then made his way along the roofline, before losing his footing and falling into the street below. His attempted escape and subsequent fall was captured on CCTV and witnessed by several shocked members of the public.

The man’s fall is thought to have been broken by a shop sign that caught the hood of his clothing.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene at noon and the man was treated by paramedics in the street before being rushed to Ninewells hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Dozens of horrified Christmas shoppers looked on as the emergency services taped off the scene and shut down High Street to passing traffic.

One distraught shopper said, “I think the kid lived there and had panicked when the police arrived. He seems to have ran up on to the roof.

“It must have been slippy up there today and there’s a lot of moss.

“We knew he had been badly injured but we didn’t know he had died. It’s a real tragedy.”

One local shop worker said he believed the man’s mother lived in the building and was interviewed by police shortly before the incident occurred.

“I saw the police talking to a woman in the close and the next thing people were telling me was that a man had fallen from the roof.”

A police spokesman confirmed the man’s death and said an inquiry was under way into the circumstances.

He said, “A 23-year-old man has died following a fall from the rooftop of a building in Lochee High Street.

“Police officers attended at an address there to speak to the man. He climbed out of a window at the address and on to the roof top of an adjacent building.

“CCTV camera monitored his progress and he was seen to slip and fall to the ground. He sustained serious injuries.

“The man was treated at the scene by paramedics. He was then taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“An inquiry is now under way into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

“The identity of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been fully informed.”
