Gordon’s delight

LEE MILLER . . . on target for Walter Smith’s Scotland Future team.

While the media spotlight was falling on Alex McLeish and Rangers’ exploits in the Champions League, a posse of Dundee United players were doing their international prospects no harm whatsoever (writes Graeme Finnan).
Barry Robson, Mark Kerr and Lee Miller were all involved as Scotland’s Future squad beat Poland 2-0 at Rugby Park, while Garry Kenneth, Greg Cameron and David Goodwillie all starred in Scotland Under-19’s fine 3-1 win in Portugal.

Even more pleasing from a Tangerine perspective was the fact Miller and Kenneth both managed to get their names on the scoresheet for their respective sides.

That delighted club boss Gordon Chisholm, who now hopes his men can take the confidence gained from their international experiences into Saturday’s SPL clash at Livingston.

“I was at Rugby Park and I was delighted with our lads in what I thought was an excellent game of football,” said Gordon today.

“Barry was on from the start and I thought he did very well, keeping good possession and creating a couple of chances.

“Big Lee came on and got off to a flier, taking his goal very well, while Mark got a run for the last 20 minutes or so and also played his part.

“I thought it was a very good exercise and, hopefully, it has given these guys a taste of what it’s all about at that level and the confidence they’ve gained from getting a result will follow on into Saturday’s game at Livi.”

Meanwhile, Gordon was doubly delighted after receiving a report on how the Tannadice trio involved with the Under-19 side fared in Portugal.

“We’ve spoken to the Under-19 coach Tommy Wilson and he has been absolutely raving about their performances.

“So when you add that to the display of the guys in the Future squad, it’s very pleasing all round.”

Although Scotland Under-19s are due to play Portugal again tomorrow, Kenneth and Goodwillie will fly home today as they are in United’s plans for Saturday’s game against Paul Lambert’s men.

And with no reported injuries, they’ll join Kerr, Robson and Miller, along with the rest of their team-mates on the training ground tomorrow as attention turns to the trip to Almondvale.

Long-term injury victim Lee Mair could be back in action as early as Hogmanay, when United visit Rangers in the league.

Alan keen to beef up squad
Dundee boss Alan Kernaghan has admitted he’d like to add a bit of weight to his squad when the transfer window opens in January (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Dens Park gaffer feels his side needs a greater presence, especially in the forward areas, where they are struggling to make an impact in games.

“We have lost a couple of big lads in Tom Hutchinson and Adrian Madaschi, but we still have Bobby Mann, while I’m hoping Stuart McCluskey will be back in training tomorrow,” said Alan.

“We are also looking forward to Lee Wilkie getting back in action in the new year.”

“However, there is no denying we could do with a big striker, but I suppose everybody would like one in their team.

“Kevin McDonald gives us a bit of height in midfield, but he’s still young and needs to learn to be more aggressive when attacking the ball, especially in the air.

“Saying that, I’ve been really pleased how he has done so far this season.”

Young striker Craig O’Reilly will be back at Dens tomorrow after featuring for Scotland Under-19s in their 3-1 win in Portugal yesterday. Defender Mark Allison will remain with the national squad, who play a the second match of their double-header tomorrow.
