Xbox 360: Dundee retailer’s looting fears
A Dundee retailer is not opening its store at midnight tonight for the launch of the much-anticipated Xbox 360 games console because of fears that desperate gamers will resort to “any means necessary” to get their hands on the sold-out machine.
There is a worldwide shortage of the Xbox 360, which is the first of the next generation of games consoles, marking the start of a new era in video gaming.

It sold out quickly when it was launched in America last week and most shops in Britain have run out of their allocation because people have pre-ordered the Microsoft machine.

Dundee computer retailer Game frequently has midnight openings of its Murraygate store for big console and games releases.

But the shop will not open at midnight tonight because the scarcity and value of the £210 console makes this too much of a “security risk”.

Manager Richard Meade said, “In America there were reports of lootings because there is a worldwide shortage of the unit. After discussions between head office and Microsoft, we have decided we are not opening at midnight because of the security risk.

“People were so desperate to get this console in America that if they couldn’t buy one legally, they resorted to any means necessary.

“Not opening at midnight is not a criticism of Tayside Police, who have been good to us in the past, and have patrolled the area when we’ve had midnight openings. But because of the value and the scarcity of these machines we have decided not to take the chance this time.

“We have never seen demand for any console or game like this before.”
