| The petition, which was being handed in at Downing Street, calls for a review of the plan in the light of renewed military requirements caused by the terror threat.
Jeff Duncan, from Dundee, of the Save the Scottish Regiments campaign said, “This petition asks the Government to live up to the promise it made the day after the election that it would be a listening government.”
Mr Duncan said that recruits would be put off signing up to the new regiment. “They are incredibly proud of their local regiments and they don’t want to go into this faceless one,” he said.
Former Warrant Officer Rob Scott, from Fife, said, “There is hardly a family in Fife that hasn’t a connection with The Black Watch.”
The Government announced last year that it was to create one super-regiment from The Black Watch, The Highlanders, The Royal Scots, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers and The Royal Highland Fusiliers.
