| Household rubbish has been discarded in the parking area at the former ABB transformers site bordering Kingsway East.
Fridges, tyres, garden furniture and even old beds have been left by fly-tippers on an unsightly pile visible from the road.
“The building is in a bad enough way itself, with all the broken windows and stuff,” said one commuter who contacted the Tele.
“Now on top of that there’s a big pile of rubbish just dumped in the area at the front of the building — a less than attractive sight for visitors passing through Dundee on the Kingsway.
“It makes you wonder whether this has been done by people who couldn’t be bothered making the journey to Marchbanks or Riverside now that the nearby Baldovie skips are shut.
“I noticed that the owners had done some landscaping work on the bushes at the front of the building, so it’s not as if they are neglecting it. Hopefully they will get this cleared up, then look at whether any steps can be taken to prevent further fly-tipping on the site.”
The 8.5-acre site has become increasingly run down since production ceased there three years ago.
There have also been problems recently with gangs of youths playing in and around the factory, despite a number of hazards.
A spokesperson ABB said today that the company was “fully aware” of the fly-tipping situation.
“We have had meetings with the local authority and they will be removing the debris very shortly, at our cost,” she said.
“Our property manager was up there last week, and we have been reviewing the security arrangements as well to try to make improvements.
“We take health and safety and security extremely seriously. We will see what else we can do to improve the situation there.”
Fly-tippers face a fine of up to £20,000 and/or six months in prison. Fly-tipping can reported to Dump Dumpers on 0845 230 4090. |
