| In a new planning advice note, the Scottish Executive has highlighted the Ardler Village redevelopment as a project that embodies successful elements of street design it wishes to promote in future housebuilding schemes.
It said there was “a growing concern” that many housing layouts had become dominated by technical and engineering requirements, and a change in approach towards street design was needed to produce better quality, more attractive, and safe residential environments.
The housing estate had suffered years of decline before ownership was transferred to Sanctuary Scotland Housing, and a joint initiative between Communities Scotland, Wimpey Homes and Dundee City Council saw an £80 million redevelopment transform the area.
Earlier this year Ardler was also praised for its parks, gardens and open spaces by Greenspace Scotland. The area now has a new park with bowling green, football pitches, children’s play area, ponds and informal open spaces.
Dundee planning and transportation convener Councillor Fiona Grant said, “The city council is delighted that its work with partners and the community in Ardler is being recognised. We are keen to ensure neighbour-hoods can benefit from improvements in street layouts.” |
