Jack poised to travel
Dundee goalkeeper Kelvin Jack is set to head west over the weekend, but it is still not certain he will be fit enough for a crack at World Cup glory with Trinidad and Tobago next week (writes Tom Duthie).
Jack has not played for country or club since damaging a knee in the Caribbean island’s victory against Mexico last month that set up the two-leg play-off against Bahrain, which will see the winners heading for the finals in Germany next summer.

In fact, the 29-year-old has not completed a full training session in the three weeks since he collided with a post and limped off at half-time against the Mexicans.

Knowing that, whatever happens, he will not be available for Dundee’s clash with St Johnstone on Saturday week — the same day Trinidad and Bahrain meet in Port of Spain — Dark Blues boss Alan Kernaghan has expressed the hope his goalie does not miss out on the biggest game of his career.

“He is due to meet up with the Trinidad squad this weekend and I think he’s at the stage where he will be fit enough to travel, though I can’t say if he will be ready for the game,” said Alan today.

“I hope he is, because it is a massive occasion and would be a great experience for him. Trying to reach a World Cup is something pretty special and it would be a pity if he doesn’t make it.”

While Jack will, at the very least, have the sun on his back in Trinidad, back here Alan expects to have another of his recent absentees with the squad as they build up to the visit of Saints.

Midfielder Iain Anderson has been out for a month now with ankle trouble, but has been stepping up his training and should be working normally with the rest of the squad next week.

Back working today were several players who picked up knocks at Airdrie last Saturday and they, too, will be ready to play next week.

“There were a few more with us in training today than there were at the beginning of the week and, over the next few days, we should have a few more back,” added Alan.
