Lord Provost praises Dundee quake Donations

Lord Provost John Letford sits atop the pile of donated relief goods as the lorries are loaded in Dundee.

Evening Telegraph lorries have left Dundee loaded with emergency supplies for victims of the earthquake that affected Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, writes Rob McLaren.
The Lord Provost’s appeal — run in conjunction with, the council’s economic development department, the city's Asian community and the Tele — has been overwhelmed with donations of blankets, tents and medical supplies.

Now the first of the lorries has started to deliver the Dundee aid to the Islamic Relief Fund, based in Glasgow, who will then transport the goods to the earthquake-hit regions.

As the vehicles were loaded with the help of John Letford at the appeal’s Miln Street collection point, the Lord Provost praised the people of the city for their quick response.

“So far, 40 to 50 boxes of goods have been collected. The response has been magnificent.

“I’m usually not surprised by the generosity of the people of the city, but even I have been astonished that so much has been collected so quickly.

“We are going to keep the appeal open for another couple of weeks so people still have time to donate.

“We are looking specifically for blankets, tents, sleeping bags and medical equipment.

“The staff of the council’s economic development team have done a great job at organising everything.

“I heard a rumour that the Islamic Relief Fund is no longer needing tents and blankets but this is simply not the case.

“Goods are still being collected and the items are being sent to the affected area as quickly as possible.”
