Delight at Dundee quake response

Dundonians have responded quickly and generously to the joint appeal for emergency supplies for victims of the Asia earthquake, writes James Rougvie.
An estimated two million people are homeless following the disaster in Pakistan and part of India, according to the United Nations, and it’s feared the death toll could be over 54,000.

So far, 29,000 tents and 118,000 blankets have been distributed.

Major General Farooq Ahmed Khan, Pakistan’s relief commissioner, says 100,000 tents are needed.

The joint appeal, linking Lord Provost John Letford, the Evening Telegraph, the city’s Asian community and the council’s economic development department, was only due to come on stream today.

But, over the weekend, there has been a steady flow of life-saving gear delivered to the special collection point at Unit 9, Miln Street.

It is expected the first lorry, provided by the Tele, will be on its way to Glasgow soon for delivery to the Islamic Relief Fund.

Lord Provost Letford said, “We are delighted with the response so far.

“A large number of tents, blankets, sleeping bags and camping mattresses have been handed in which, along with medical supplies, are just what are needed to help people.

“The response underlines the tremendous way people in this city think about the plight of other people and I hope people will continue to bring items along to the collection point.”
