| The longest-lived pensioners are to be found in Perth and Kinross, where there is an average of 76.3 years, against a national average of 73, followed by Angus with an expectancy of 75.7 years, with Fifers living on average 74.7 years.
As expected of a city officially given the status of deprived, Dundee lags slightly but not greatly behind the national average with a male life expectancy of 72.5 years.
Compared with the rest of Scotland, Dundee is in seventh bottom place.
Men in Scotland can now expect to live to the age of 73.
But while men in Glasgow will be lucky to see their 70th birthday, those living in neighbouring East Dunbartonshire can expect to live to 77.
The figures were disclosed by the Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan MacNiven, in a report giving life expectancy in council and health board areas.
The study shows that life expectancy is increasing and the gap between the life expectancy of men and women is closing.
But the gap between the highest and lowest areas for life expectancy is also increasing.
Mr MacNiven said, “While it is encouraging that life expectancy at birth across Scotland is increasing, there are still large differences between areas.”
Life expectancy at birth in Scotland is now 73.8 years for men and 79 for women, compared to 71.7 years and 77.4 in the early 1990s.
Aberdeenshire has the longest life expectancy for women, at 80.8 years, nearly four and a half years longer than the city of Glasgow, which at 76.4 years has the shortest life expectancy for women. |
