Chance for bear’s-eye view of enclosure

A Dundee councillor was bearing up today as he found himself within an enclosure at the city’s Camperdown Wildlife Centre.
Leisure and arts convener Charles Farquhar visited the new compound for European brown bears Comet and Star ahead of an open day at the centre this Sunday.

Visitors will get the chance to go into the enclosure and experience what it is like for the animals.

The enclosure has a special feature in the form of a circular stone “broch,” a sculptural installation by American artist Mark Dion.

It provides what centre staff described as a “unique and fascinating space” for visitors.

Councillor Farquhar said, “The new brown bear enclosure, with visitor centre in the form of a broch, is a fantastic new facility for all the public and Camperdown’s two bears to enjoy.

“This Sunday will be the only chance to have a tour and see what life will be like for the bears once they move in.

“To celebrate this new project, there will be a week of family activities, including fun art sessions with staff of DCA at the wildlife centre.”

The festivities run from Monday to Friday next week, with daily art and print workshops held between 11am and noon and 1pm and 2.30pm.

Two artists and designers will help participants draw, paint and design new animal houses for the Camperdown Crew.

Younger participants can take part in making a big frieze for the centre.

Places can be booked by calling Dundee 909900.
