Education findings welcomed
An independent external consultant commissioned by Dundee City Council has noted early signs of improvement in educational attainment levels in several key areas. For the first time, the city council has enlisted the help of an external consultant to make a comparison of pre-appeal exam figures from 2005 with those from 2004.
Education convener Kevin Keenan has welcomed the information, which will be used to help shape the direction of education in the city, and to report on educational performance.

He said, “We are not complacent, and a lot of work needs to be done to continue supporting pupils, parents and teachers who are working together to raise attainment throughout our schools.

“Our ongoing best value review of education is designed to raise attainment across the board, and I’m encouraged by the positive attitude and determination to improve performance that all parties are showing to the process.”

Comparison of pre-appeal pass rates for 2005 with the previous year show an increase in the number of S4 pupils attaining Standard Grades in both English and Maths. In 2005, 83% of pupils in S4 achieved a standard grade pass in English and Maths — an increase of 1% on 2004. The pass rate has risen from 86% to 87% in English and from 85% to 87% in Maths.

Similarly, the percentage of S5 pupils passing three or more Highers has increased by 1% from 14% in 2004 to 15% in 2005. The number of S5 pupils passing five or more Highers has also risen by 1% from 5% in 2004 to 6% in 2005.

Dundee’s director of education, Anne Wilson, is currently discussing the pre-appeal exam results with secondary head teachers. She said, “We want to develop an improving trend in our exam results, and are committed to this, but we’re also realistic enough to know this will take time, and there will not be a dramatic overnight transformation.”
