£4.5m for Dundee dental hospital
The Scottish Executive has pledged a one-off emergency funding package of £4.5 million to resolve an over-subscription crisis at Dundee Dental School.
The crisis arose after a surge in demand for dental school places led to a 40% rise in applications, which in turn led to would-be students being offered £2000 to delay their course for a year.

The Executive blamed admissions staff for making too many offers to students.

But following a meeting today with Dundee University principal Sir Alan Langlands, deputy health minister Lewis MacDonald said, “I am pleased to announce that the Scottish Executive has agreed to put into place a one-off emergency funding package of £4.5 million to support the clinical costs of these students’ education, including one-year NHS vocational training after graduation.”

Sir Alan said, “We are delighted the Executive has taken this swift and decisive action to help us accommodate the clinical training needs of this year's enlarged enrolment.

“The university is committed to maintaining the high standards of teaching and training offered at the dental school.”
