Perth vandalism condemned
Vandals have once again struck at the St John’s area of Perth, this time daubing red paint over an ornamental bollard.
The carefully-carved structure, unveiled less than two years ago, was created as part of a wide-ranging street art project launched to coincide with the pedestrianisation of the city centre area.

Despite the damage, the local authority was today in defiant mood, insisting the acts of thoughtless thugs would not “detract from the area”.

Earlier this year police were forced to use CCTV footage in a bid to identify those responsible for causing nearly £5000 of damage to the ornamental bollards. Once again it would seem the costly structures have been simply too tempting for some individuals.

“I was horrified to see the bollards outside St John’s Kirk had been targeted again,” said one local, who contacted the Evening Telegraph after noticing the damage. “This area of Perth is gorgeous — it is such a shame some thugs just don’t seem to care.”

Councillor Alan Livingstone, convener of the local authority’s enterprise and infrastructure committee, said the vast majority of Perth residents would join him in condemning the vandalism.

“However, this latest act will not detract from the beauty and vibrancy of the area,” he said.

Funded by Perth and Kinross Council and the Scottish Executive, the animal heads on the bollards outside St John’s Kirk match the Lorimer carvings on the pew ends within the church.
