Dundee fatal crash

The three vehicles involved in the accident.

An elderly man died today, when his car was involved in a head-on smash on the western outskirts of Dundee.
The accident happened around 10.15 on the A923 Coupar Angus Road, near Birkhill Cemetery, when the man’s red Ford Focus, travelling towards Birkhill, was involved in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Zafira heading in the opposite direction.

A Triumph Daytona Centennial motorbike was then involved in a collision with the Zafira.

The Focus driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released until a formal identification has taken place.

The female occupant of the Zafira and the male motorcyclist were taken to Ninewells Hospital.

The Zafira driver was believed to have sustained minor injuries, while the motorcyclist, who was taken from the scene on a spinal board, incurred more serious wounds to his leg and body, though they’re not thought to be life-threatening.

No one else was involved in the incident.

A police spokesperson said it wasn’t yet clear whether the fatality was a direct result of the crash, or happened prior to it taking place.

The road was closed from the roundabout at the entrance of Camperdown Park to Gourdie Brae for about an hour, to allow crash scene experts to carry out investigations.

The section between Birkhill and Templeton Road was reopened at about 11.20am.

A diversion was in place along the Kingsway and up Gourdie Brae while the investigators were at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to get in touch with Tayside Police on Dundee (01382) 223200.
