| The Central Baptist Church in Dundee’s Ward Road is seeking approval to demolish an old-established adjoining building to create a new community church hall, possibly at a cost in excess of £1 million.
The church is to ask the city council planners for permission to demolish the former Curr and Dewar’s auction house, which they acquired last summer when the owners left for another part of the city. The auction house is C-listed, one of the lowest categories of architectural importance.
The application also asks for approval to form a doorway in the B-listed church, which will connect with the new building.
George Stewart, convenor of the church’s property group, said the new building would be used for church activities, but would also be available for community use.
He added that the church was still at a fairly early stage in proceedings, and until planning permission was granted, they would be unable to ascertain precise costs, although he hazarded a guess the total costs could be more than £1 million.
He said the church was already in the process of raising money. |
