MILK BOY A PAYNE TO GRAEME
Ex-Pat GRAHAM ABERDEIN, in Canada since 1975, was “surfing the Web for Dundee United stuff” when he came across “Dundonian Down Under” — a BwB piece on Kenny Murphy from January 28 this year.
“I used to chum around with both Kenny and Colin McGinnis in the late 1960s/early 70s,” said Graham, also known as “Aber” or “Big Abe”.
“At the time, they lived across the road from one another on Nithsdale Avenue in West Kirkton, and I lived just around the corner on Annandale Avenue.
“The three of us delivered milk together for the DPM company (I was a Sherritt man — JB) and we had a girl named Kathleen on our squad.
“She certainly got the heads turning back at the depot.
“I lost touch with Kenny when he moved to Australia, but it’s nice to hear he had some success Down Under.
“You also mentioned ‘the wee man’ Graeme Payne.
“I went to Kirkton High School at the same time as Graeme, although I was a year ahead of him.
“During our school years, we played quite a bit of football together, usually against each other.
“Graeme even came out to play with the boys on Sunday afternoons after we left school — the same time as he was trying to get into the first team with Dundee United.
“I recall quite vividly he would always complain that, after basically running through our whole team, he could never get past me on the back line (I just seemed to have his number).
“Thanks for stirring up some enjoyable memories.”
THIS LOCHEE TEAM CURRIED FAVOUR
The photo at the foot of this column (bottom one of three) was sent in with scant details, but it’s Lochee United, who won the Currie Cup in 1977-78, beating Carnoustie 3-2 at North End Park.
Included is my former team-mate at East Fife Jim Finlayson, and also Eddie Bruce, who hands out very bad racing tips.
Norrie Wyllie has recently retired from the Fire Brigade, while Ricky “Tich” Nicol is still serving with the brigade and was a terrific defender during Harris FP’s great spell under Joe McFadzean.

Can the sender of this photo get back in touch so I can return the photo?
ashdale reunion update
JIM MELVILLE’S plea (BwB, July 26) for former Ashdale players to get in touch has been met with great response.
“I have had responses from 14 players so far, plus some officials,” enthused Jim.
“I’ve even had emails from Canada and Australia. I never thought that so many people read the Tully on the internet.
“The date for our Ashdale reunion is Friday, October 21, at the Park House Hotel, Coupar Angus Road, Dundee.
“Time is 7 pm for dinner at 7.45.”
seith skippered dundee
BRIAN SMITH, from Kirkton, Dundee, saw the photo (July 22) of St Vincent’s football team with Dundee player Bobby Seith.
“Bobby Seith was a great player with Dundee during their successful years of the early 1960s,” he said. “In fact, he really was an unsung hero of that famous line-up — Liney/Slater; Hamilton, Cox; Seith, Ure, Wishart; Smith, Penman, Cousin, Gilzean, Robertson.
“The photo also prompted an argument among regulars in my local pub.
“I say he captained Dundee in their European Cup run of 1962-63, but my friends say Bobby Cox skippered the Dark Blues in all their ties that season.”
Footnote . . . Bobby Cox was injured for the two semi-final legs against AC Milan, and Seith deputised.

DAPPER GEORGE AND LOGIE IMMACULATE
GEORGE ANDERSON, of Glenaffric Terrace, Dundee, sends in another contribution.
George always keeps himself in good trim — and I regularly see him pounding the streets in the north end area of the city.
Indeed, ‘Geordie’ was always immaculately dressed and, in the 1960s, after a few refreshments in the Glamis Lounge (part of the then Angus Hotel in Dundee), I can still vividly picture him parading around the J. M. Ballroom with his four-button suit, Irish poplin tie and springer shoes.
The photo below (top) is of LOGIE THISTLE, who won the Dundee and District Juvenile League in season 1970-71.
The quality of the print is not great, but it is worth using as there some very well-known local personalities on show.
“The late John Lynch, captain of the team, is holding the trophy,” said George. “Ian McGovern is also in the photo and I’ll be heading out to Australia this year to see him.”
Also in the photo is current Dundee United director John Bennett.
